When A Death Occurs
A death of a loved one is a difficult time, one that you do not have to face alone. When a death occurs notify the immediate family members, close friends and employer or business associates – then contact Chipman Funeral Home. If the death has occurred at home, you will need to contact the local police and/or Extra Mural. Chipman Funeral Home will assist you with all the funeral arrangements including choosing the casket, contacting clergy, making any necessary arrangements with the cemetery, setting the times for visitation, arranging the time and place for the funeral, preparing and placing the obituary notice.
The funeral director will require the following information in order to register the death: full name and address of deceased, date and place of birth, date and place of death, father’s name and place of birth, mother’s maiden name and place of birth, occupation and marital status of the deceased and name of next-of-kin, relationship to the deceased and mailing address.
The funeral director will also require that you provide obituary information, which should include any special requests you may have, such as donations to a charity. You will have to choose and contact those people you wish to have as pallbearers.
Consider turning to a close friend or family member to assist with some events which may occur of the next few days, such as arranging for someone to answer the telephone or door (keeping a record for your future reference), coordinating the supplying of food, cleaning, child care, making any arrangements for out of Province relatives or friends who will be attending the funeral and the reception following the funeral.
After the funeral, your funeral provider will give you any e-mails, memorial cards and cards received with flowers. A list should be prepared so acknowledgments can be sent by you. It will also be necessary for you to decide what to do with the flowers after the service. Some people give them to relatives, friends, nursing homes or hospitals, or keep as a lasting memorial, particularly plants, especially in the winter season when the Community Vault must be used due to cemetery regulations.
You will have to locate the deceased’s Last Will and Testament and notify the lawyer and executor of the death. It will also be necessary to locate and collect any benefits which may be available to the deceased’s estate. You will have to check for any life or casualty insurance policies, death benefits such as Canada Pension, social security, credit or trade union, fraternal and military. Please refer to our Resources tab for a complete listing of various links which may assist you.
You will also have to notify any of the deceased’s banks of the death and check on all debts and installment payments. Arrangement for the payment of all debts of the deceased must be made.
If the deceased lived alone, notify the utility companies and make arrangements with the Post Office for delivery of all mail to your address. If the deceased was a tenant, the Landlord must be notified of the death and arrangements made for the removal deceased’s personal belongings.
If the deceased was a veteran, arrangements need to be discussed with Last Post. Chipman Funeral Home is always available to assist.
