Chipman Funeral Home Ltd.

BROGAN, Woodrow F. – Chipman, NB

Woodrow Frederick Brogan died peacefully at Upper River Valley Hospital on Sunday, June 28.  He was born on October 2, 1921 at the home of his Miller grandparents in The Range on Grand Lake.  The second eldest of eleven children, Woodrow was the son of Frederick Brogan and Allie Miller.  Although he spent his last two years in Woodstock, he was, with the exception of his World War II overseas service, a Chipman resident.

Many in the Queens and York County areas would remember Woodrow as the man who, for his thirty years as a New Brunswick Power employee, read their power meters.  Others would remember having swum, water-skied, fished, curled, snowshoed, downhill or cross-country skied, danced, or played bridge, cribbage or forty-fives with him.  He last danced just days before he entered hospital.

In addition to his parents, Woodrow was predeceased by his wife of seventy years, Margaret Fraser Brogan; and his siblings, Burtis, Kenneth, Mildred, Irene, Bessie, Charles, and Clifford.  He is survived by his daughter, Frances Brogan; his son-in-law, David O’Brien; his granddaughter, Dr. Meaghan O’Brien; Meaghan’s partner, Derek Kitchen and Derek’s daughter, Olivia; his grandson, Liam O’Brien; his granddaughter-in-law, Amorette O’Brien; his great-grandsons, Brogan and Flynn O’Brien; his sisters, Ferne Armstrong, Anna Taylor, and Evelyn Fee; and nieces and nephews.

Woodrow’s two years at Riverside Court in Woodstock were happy ones.  He sang the praises of the staff and their services; and was also grateful for the kind treatment he received whenever mishaps landed him at Upper River Valley Hospital.  As he said often during these years, “I’m the luckiest man on the planet.”

In keeping with COVID restrictions, there will be a private funeral with Reverend Betty-Jean Friedman officiating.  Remembrances, if desired, may be made to Chipman Outreach, the Chipman Youth Centre, Chipman United Church, or to a charity of choice.

Arrangements are in the compassionate care of Chipman Funeral Home & Crematorium (339-6612).  Memories and condolences may be shared through www.chipmanfuneralhome.ca

Woody in 1973 was my trainer as a meter reader, and what a great trainer he was. The tips and tricks to getting to the meters. I have been looking forward to visiting Woody as I live in Mapledale, the article in the ageless magazine was very well written. Sorry to Woody’s family for their loss.

To Frances, David and family, We are heartbroken to think that Uncle Woodie is no longer amongst us. However, Woodrow at the lake, swimming, water skiing are by far my fondest childhood memories. He was game for just about any adventure! We’re so pleased we were able to have such a great visit with him both at Riverside Court and your home just this past year. Know our thoughts are with you. He will be so missed by all of us Frasers.

Linda and I offer our deepest sympathy on the loss of your dad. He was a giant of a man for his country, his family, his church, his community, and his friends. How fondly we remember those wonderful summers at Grand Lake and his water ski exploits. I was there when he skied the summer he turned eighty. A day I shall never forget.

Frances ~~ Norma (Ward) sent me the notice of your dad’s passing. He and Margaret were an integral part of our 8 years in Chipman in so many many ways–especially at Grand Lake!! They continued to visit my folks here on PEI and my mum and dad would want to be remembered to you for the long friendship they had with both your mum & dad. They were a steady constant presence. May you and yours find peace in carrying on such a long long legacy of marital commitment and community service. My love to you, Frances, and kindest reagrds… Read more »

Woodrow will always hold a special place in our hearts. 32 years ago he saved our 3 year old son, his great nephew, from drowning. We are forever grateful.
