December 5, 1944 – March 16, 2019
Linda Ann Hickey passed away peacefully surrounded by family. The daughter of Lester and Lillian Austin was born in Minto, New Brunswick, and spent her youth there until moving to Saint John, New Brunswick, to work at the General Hospital. She then took the Registered Nursing Assistant program at the Saint John Community College, graduating in 1966. Moving to Fredericton she worked at the old Victorian Public Hospital in the pediatrics unit until taking time from her career to raise three grateful children. Upon her return to work she completed a course at the Atlantic Business College and worked as a medical secretary until taking a position at the Clinical Investigation Unit at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital, where she thrived and enjoyed a close comraderie with her coworkers until retiring in 2000.
Her retirement years were spent around family and friends, with visits to Montreal, travelling to music festivals, and regular trips to the camp at Little River being her favorite pastimes. Her most cherished moments though were those spent in the backyard along the Saint John River with her husband and best friend Pat, listening to music and enjoying the river scene and traffic.
Linda was a deeply caring person, with an extraordinary ability to connect, listen, and talk to those who were fortunate enough to experience her reassuring voice. She spent many an evening and early morning in deep conversation with friends and family throughout the years as her special niece Terri can attest. She always looked back fondly on her childhood and the girlfriends and cousins of her youth, and throughout her life she loved gatherings, listening to music, and singing. She was gentle, fun, and carried an infectious smile with her wherever she went. She was foremost a loving mother and wife and will be missed by her family dearly.
Linda is survived by her mother Lilian Austin of Minto, NB, Husband Pat Hickey, son Roy Hickey (Marion Hiltz), daughter Charlene Hickey (Derek Gallant) of Fredericton, NB, daughter Rosalind Hickey (Stephen Oakes) of Montreal, QC, brother David Austin (Gladys) of Minto, NB, and her much-loved grandchildren Ashley Garnett (Cody Bell), Alex Garnett, Danielle Hickey, Dylan Oakes, and Cameron Hickey. She is also survived by nephews Darren Austin, Ryan Hickey, Michael Hickey, and nieces Terri Caissie, Julie Hickey, and Heather Hickey.
Linda was predeceased by her father Lester Austin, and infant brother John Austin.
The family would like to thank those at the DECH, the Saint John Regional Hospital, and the Extra-Mural therapists who helped Linda through the year.
At Linda’s request, there will be no visitation or funeral service. A Celebration of Life with family and close friends will be held at a later date.
